What a natal chart shows
In Western astrology, a natal (birth) chart records where the Sun, Moon and planets were along the zodiac at the moment of birth, as seen from the birthplace. The chart wheel is divided into the twelve signs and twelve houses. The ascendant, or rising sign, is the sign on the eastern horizon; the midheaven (MC) is the highest point of the ecliptic. Astrologers read the planets’ signs, houses and the angles between them (aspects) as a symbolic portrait. Astrology is a tradition of symbolism, not a science, so treat the interpretation as reflection rather than prediction.

The rising sign changes about every two hours, so even a 15-minute error can matter near a sign boundary. Birth certificates or hospital records are the best source of the time.
How the calculation works
The planet positions use NASA JPL’s approximate orbital elements and the Moon uses the main terms of Meeus’s lunar theory — checked against known eclipses and planetary conjunctions to about a tenth of a degree. The ascendant and midheaven come from sidereal time at your birthplace and the tilt of Earth’s axis. Houses use either the whole-sign system (each house is one sign, starting with the rising sign) or equal houses (30° each from the ascendant). Placidus and other quadrant systems are not included.

Worked example
For a birth on 15 June 1990 at 14:30 in London (UTC+1 for summer time, latitude 51.51°N, longitude 0.13°W), the calculator places the Sun in Gemini and shows the Moon, the planets and the rising sign with their degrees, the house each planet falls in and a list of aspects sorted by how exact they are. The chart wheel puts the ascendant on the left, as is traditional, with signs running anticlockwise.
Finding your birthplace coordinates
Search a map for your birth town and read the latitude and longitude, or use values for the nearest city — a few kilometres makes little difference. North latitudes and east longitudes are positive; south and west are negative. For the UTC offset, remember that many countries use daylight saving time, so a summer birth in New York is UTC−4, not −5.
